The Women’s Center of Jacksonville supports those in our community and across the country who have the courage to speak out about the sexual assault, sexual harassment and unwanted sexual advances they have silently endured.
Sexual violence is an epidemic and victimization may be experienced by all ages, genders, ethnicities, and socioeconomic groups. The damage is deep and the pain that results is incredibly real. However, it is important to recognize that women have continually endured unequal access and opportunity in the work force, and have suffered a disproportionate imbalance of power for many years.
As the number of high-profile men accused of sexual misconduct grows, victims are sharing their stories of harassment and abuse, and our country is finally listening. For each woman who speaks up about her own experience, it is easier for other women to do the same. Instead of fearing retribution, women are now raising their voices, as shame does not lie with the survivors of sexual assault and misconduct; shame lies within the culture of acceptance that discouraged and often condemned those who chose to come forward.
Now it’s your turn to help survivors of sexual assault. Reflect on the way you treat others, take a stand against sexual misconduct and advocate for those who have suffered in silence for so long. The future is in your hands: start using your voice to stop sexual assault, harassment and unwanted sexual advances now.
The Women’s Center of Jacksonville helps women heal from sexual assault through a variety of free and low-cost resources including the 24-hour rape crisis hotline at 904.721.7273.
