Drawing for Cookie Davis’s Sculpture “If I had Wings”
to benefit Expanded Horizons Program

The Expanded Horizons Literacy Program has launched an exciting fundraiser that we would like to share with you. Cookie Davis, a respected Jacksonville artist whose work has exhibited often at the Women’s Center, has graciously donated a piece of her work for us to offer as the prize in a drawing.

Cookie lives and works in Jacksonville. In addition to charcoal, oil, and pastels, she had the good fortune to explore three dimensional work which has led to her success as a sculptor. She has participated in solo exhibitions and group shows throughout the south and has work in private and corporate collections both nationally and internationally.

Cookie says of her work, "My sculptures represent many facets of womanhood and ethnic backgrounds. They are black, or brown, or white; they are the colors of the world. I create through their body language a message of dignity, hope, and love.”

The tickets to win this wonderful sculpture are $5.00 apiece, and we hope you will purchase one (or more) and encourage friends and family to do the same. View the sculpture in our website gallery or at the Community Education Director’s office at the Women’s Center. To see more of Cookie Davis’ work, you can go to www.cookiedavis.com.

Thank you for any help you can give in this effort. As you know, money is very tight this year, and Expanded Horizons has felt the pinch more than some other programs. Among other things, we have had to suspend our babysitting services due to financial constraints, an action that cuts deeply into the premise of our program, and one we hope to rescind in the future.

This is a great opportunity for someone to own an original piece of art by an established artist valued at close to $200.00. Those of you who aren’t interested in art or this particular piece are welcome to purchase a ticket just to contribute to a worthy cause.

You may get yours by contacting Cathy at the Women’s Center at 722-3000, ext.234, picking them up if you are at the building, or mailing your order with accompanying payment to the Women’s Center of Jacksonville, 5644 Colcord Avenue, Jacksonville FL 32211. Please include your name, address, phone number, and email address. We plan to continue the offering at least through the next Art & Soul opening January 21, 2010, so there is plenty of time to buy. The drawing will probably take place in early February.

Thanks for your interest and support. We appreciate anything you can do to make this project a success.
