Annual Events
The Women's Center of Jacksonville produces a variety of special events intended to highlight the contributions made by women and the injustices women face. These annual events include:
- Art & Soul Opening Receptions
Held in January, April, July and October, these opening night receptions mark the beginning of a new art exhibit at WCJ. With great art, great food, and great friends, these openings are the place to be in Jacksonville each quarter.
- Women's History Month
In March of every year, there are a multitude of events held all over the City of Jacksonville to commemorate the important role of women in the history of our country and the world. Be sure to check the events calendar on this website for March to find out about Lunch & Learns and Book Talks at WCJ to commemorate Women's History Month.
- International Women's Day
Each year on March 8th, this day is set aside internationally as a day to honor women. Traditionally a much bigger event in the International Community than in the US, the Women's Center of Jacksonville brings this phenomenon to the City of Jacksonville each year. WCJ convenes a broad coalition of women's groups and international organizations to plan our local celebration. An international potluck dinner is included with a variety of foods. The evening continues with testimony by women about conditions in their home countries. Women from Senegal, Mauritania, Colombia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq have all participated in past years. The evening concludes with live entertainment and dancing.
- Sexual Assault Awareness Day
Held in early April each year, this is a day for building awareness within our community about the issues of sexual assault. The day consists of a public event in the morning and a sexual assault survivor speak out in the evening. This day marks the beginning of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
- Equal Pay Day
Occurs in April every year and marks the point in the year in which women's wages catch up with men's wages from the previous year. The Women's Center of Jacksonville, together with the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women and Women's Digest Magazine, host a luncheon to call attention to the fact that women are currently making 76 cents on the dollar compared to men. At this event the prestigious Spirit of Rosie Awards are presented to three women for breaking the glass ceiling, mentoring other women, succeeding in non-traditional careers, or for being professional pioneers.
- Celebration of Women
Held in late August every year to commemorate the anniversary of Women's suffrage, this event brings the unique art of storytelling to the River City. Nationally acclaimed storytellers perform at the Times Union Performing Arts Center in the biggest fundraising event of the year for the Women's Center of Jacksonville. The evening includes a fabulous silent auction, patron party, and incredible performances.
- Caring And Sharing Hope Race
Organized by the RITA Foundation and held in November each year, this 5K run/1K walk helps raise money for programs and services of the Women's Center. The Women's Center's three teams (Rape Recovery Team, Counseling Team, and Community Education Team) bring a bit of competitive spirit to the fun filled morning as runners and walkers compete for prizes. 100% of the pledges collected by WCJ participants go to support the work of the Women's Center of Jacksonville.
